BMW is celebrating two world premieres at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit on 14 – 28 January 2018. Here's everything you need to know.
The first motor show of 2018 is around the corner and we can not wait to see all the the hot metal that will be on display.
Two BMW models will celebrate their world premiere in Detroit, between January 14th and 28th: the updated i8 Coupé and the new BMW X2.
Aside from the two novelty acts, the Bavarian automaker will also bring along the BMW i8 Coupé, the i8 Roadster First Edition, together with the BMW Concept X7 iPerformance. Also on stage will be the BMW X3, the BM WM5, and BMW M3 CS. As well as a wide range of all BMW vehicles available in the US.
BMW X2 sees world premiere in the US
The BMW X2 will bring its distinctive character to Detroit. The car closes the gap between BMW X1 and BMW X3 with some exceptional styling elements, such as its innovative take on the classic kidney grille, which has a wider outline at its base than at the top.
Three engine variants are offered from launch: the BMW X2 sDrive20i petrol model with 141 kW / 192 hp, plus the X2 xDrive20d diesel variant with 140 kW / 190 hp and X2 xDrive25d diesel with 170 kW / 231 hp. Both diesel cars come as standard with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and the efficient eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The petrol model is fitted with the sporty seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission.
The first X2 version to hit the U.S. market will be the 228 HP (231 PS) xDrive28i, set to arrive in showrooms on March 3rd, 2018. Visitors in Detroit will have the chance to see, touch and explore the car about two months before its launch.
New BMW i8 Coupé debuts in Detroit
With the launch of the first-ever BMW i8 Roadster back in November, the BMW i8 got an update, too. Now named BMW i8 Coupé, the updated hybrid powertrain of the car generates a total system output of 374 PS (368 HP), with the electric motor alone being good for 143 PS (140 HP), while also powering the vehicle all the way to 65 mph (105 km/h).
Customers can then push the eDrive button, which raises the all-electric top speed to 75 mph (120 km/h). In a straight line, the new i8 Coupé can get from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds, while the BMW i8 Roadster completes the sprint in 4.6 seconds.
Speaking of the Roadster, the First Edition version coming to Detroit is limited to a production run of just 200 units. These cars will also be available with all the body paint finishes and interior designs offered on the regular i8 Coupé and Roadster – including the newly introduced E-Copper metallic and Donington Grey Metallic.
